In this tutorial, we are going to show you how to create your own cloud storage server.
Head over to http://www.cloudways.com/ and click on Free Trial. Here enter your email address, your desired password and start free trial.
You should get a confirmation email. Click on Activate your account now and you will be redirected to the creator service section in Cloudways.
Here select Digital Ocean as your server.
Then select MySQL PHP stack as your application and then select the server size.
Make sure to click on the “I know my server size” tab and move the slider to the 512MB.
We can see a warning here and we can’t roll down for more options. In the next step, you should select the location near you. For example, it’s New York. After that, go ahead and click on Launch.
Once you click on that Launch, it will start creating your server, a server is specifically for cloud. That can take about 10 minutes. Once it’s created you can edit the server name to identify it from other servers. Now click on Manage Server, then Application Management tab. Here you will see all the necessary information that you need to access to your server via FTP.
Now to access to the server we will be using Win SCP. You can download it here: https://winscp.net/eng/download.php
Just click on Installation package and then save file. After downloading, run the setup file and install Win SCP.
Now, when your Win SCP is installed, head over to https://owncloud.org/ , go to the download section and click on Download button under the Download ownCloud section. In the next windows you should select the Web installer and then follow the instruction number one (Click here and save the file to your computer).
You can copy the downloaded file to your desktop to easy access. Now go ahead, run the Win SCP program, and here enter the information from Cloudways. Now on the Win SCP the host name will be the public IP address. You should enter host name, username and password. Once it done, click on Login and confirm that it’s your server.
Now drag-n-drop the setup-owncloud.php to the public_html. Click on OK to confirm the transfer. Once it done close the Win SCP program. Now open your browser, open a new tab and here enter the public IP address again and /setup-owncloud.php. Obviously, the IP address might change in your case, because you have your own IP Address.
Now here click Next to the set up. We are going to leave it default, but you can change it to a subdirectory, change the name of the root directory, or leave it default. Then click on Next. As you can see, ownCloud is now installed. Go ahead and create an admin account. Once it done, click Finish setup.
Now from here you can connect your calendars, connect your contacts, you can download the desktop applications. You can synchronize your laptop, desktop, your phone, or all together.
In this case we are going to go ahead and walk you through on the desktop app. So, click on the Desktop and let’s scroll up a little bit here. Under the second option click on Desktop client. We are using Windows, so we will select the Windows button here to download the setup.exe.
Once it downloaded, go ahead and install it. After this run ownCloud as administrator and you will see that your server works properly. Now we have to synchronize your PC with the cloud storage. Here again enter IP address and /owncloud then click Next.
You will see the certificate, but we should go ahead. Click OK and now enter the username and password from the server. Here you can synchronize everything from server or even particular folders.
Click Connect to start synchronizing and finish.
Now if you notice here on the notification, you have your own cloud synchronizing, which is great. If you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comments section below.
