How to access your router settings: find out IP address, username and password

Hello guys. In this article we are going to show you how to get access to your router settings. Actually, your router has a small computer. It is there to take the internet connection from the modem and to split it among the different computers plugged into your network. If you have multiple computers, the router will route or send information to all the computers that it sees.

There is a lot of stuff in a router. There is a lot of menus, there is a lot of things that you can change. We want to show you how to gain at least the first thing that you need to know – access to the menu inside your router.

Find IP address and get acccess to your router menu

So, how can you do that?

First of all, it depends on your router. Some have an application that installs into the task bar in the bottom right, but for the most part a lot of routers are pretty much in the manual mode where you have to figure out how to access through your web browser.

So, the first thing you need to do is just open your web browser. The menu is made to be viewed through a web browser like a web page. Now, you need to know what is URL or what is the address that you need to type in the address bar at the top to gain access to your router.

There you can find out to what gateway your computer is connected to. In our case the gateway is

ip default gateway

So, we got a gateway to router. It’s the same address that you need to put in your browser window. By the way, is very popular gateway, a lot of routers use that, but it could be different (for example, Apple routers are often at

Once you have got the information, go to your web browser and simply type IP address into address bar. This will give you access. Now you need to enter the username and the password and that is another tricky part.

Get username and password of your router

What is the username and what is the password?

In many cases if the router has never been changed, its default is often:
Username: admin
Password: admin

Now you want to change that, because some viruses can access to router menu by using the default username and password.

But, if you cannot access to router menu by using default username and password, you have to ask the previous owner. In some routers you might have that information written underneath the router. Some routers have a sticker that has all the information underneath.

Once you find out that information, click on Login.

Now let’s say you have lost the information, let’s say you just don’t know what it is. Is there still a way to actually access your router? Yes, you can do it by resetting your router. There is a little hole at the back of the router. You need to press and hold it for about 10 seconds.

That will give you an access, because the username and the password will be defaulted to what is the default, which is usually admin/admin.

Why would you want to gain access to your router? Because there is a lot of things you can change. You can change the wireless information, the security information. Also, there is a status page, which gives you all the information about what is plugged to your router. You can also use this to do a firmware upgrade.

So, that is how you will gain access to your router settings. This can be very useful, because one day you might want to change something in there, including your Wi-Fi password or something else.
