Went to install Windows 7 SP1 today and ran into a small hitch. Started the installer and got the following error. “Installation Was Not Successful.”
Windows 7 SP1: Installation Was Not Successful
I would first try exactly what it says to do in the error message. Go download the Microsoft System Update Readiness Tool and install it.
Clear your Windows Update history. To do this go to this directory: “C:\Windows” and then rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistributionOLD. Then run Windows Updates again.
Turn off any anti-virus software you have running and then try running the SP1 installer again.
Check your log file for the SP1 installer to see what is going wrong. It is located here: “C:\Windows\Logs\CBS”.
I ended up having a checksum error: Checksum of downloaded file (0xa0d6b854) does not match expected (0xc39712ab) er=0xd.
So to fix my problem I had to go and re-download the SP1 installer again. After that everything worked fine.
If you have any pending Windows Updates or installations, you might have to restart your computer to be able to install Windows 7 SP1.
