Repair and Fix Hard Drive and Disk Errors in Windows

In this tutorial we are going to show you how you can repair and fix your hard drive from within Windows. I’m going to use CHKDSK command, use physical surface scan in order to determine several things.

We are going to determine if there is a problem with a file system which is the system upon which all files are stored on the hard drive. Also we are going to determine if there is a problem with a surface of the hard disc in the form of bad sectors (bad sectors are in fact portions of the hard drive that had become no longer usable due to prolonged use, simply from age or too many rotations etc.

At first, go to Start menu => type cmd in search field => right click on cmd program in the list and then run it as Administrator.

cmd run as administrator

You must run it as Administrator because if you do not you won’t be able to execute CHKDSK command.

Type chkdsk /f /r in command prompt and press Enter.

cmd run chkdsk

You will see a new window which is telling you that you can’t do this because volume is in use now. But we can check volume when the next time the system restarts – just type y.

Now restart your machine.

When you restart the system you will see how the file checking takes place and we’ll go trough each step of that.

chkdsk boot

Once the discs check is completed we need to go back to Windows to check the results of the discs check which is something often times users don’t do.

Go to Start menu => type compmgmt.msc in the search field => launch the Computer Management Console.

cmd compmgmt.msc

Then go to Event viewer => Windows logs => Application.

cmgmt wininit

Find Wininit source in the list and double click on it.

Here we can see the results of the disc check. You need to find out if everything is OK. At first, try to find this line: Windows was checked the file system and found no problem. You have that one? That’s great.

chkdsk no problem

If Windows did find problems with the hard drives it would repair any kind of files system problems and this will probably prolong the life of your disc for some time. But if you find problems with bad sectors in the results of the disc check it would definitely tell you that you need to start looking to replace your hard drive. From this time we recommend you to do immediately backup because now hard drive begin to fail.
