Interview Questions – Get to Know Martyn – ConfigMgr Writer
Brian: Can you give us some details on your background experience with ConfigMgr?
Martyn: First of all I want to thank you guys for inviting me to write on your blog. I started working with SMS as it was called back in the day at version 2.0, from here I have seen the product grow to what it is today and part of the System Center 2012 family. I work as a consultant with the UK firm Inframon and have been responsible for the design and implementation of some of the biggest ConfigMgr deployments in the UK, EMEA and the US.
I also work with other components in the System Center 2012 family such as Orchestrator, Service Manager and Virtual Machine Manager. I am also a private cloud expert as well and as part of my role assist organizations with private cloud deployments using Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012.
Brian: What prompted you to begin working with ConfigMgr?
Martyn: I kind of shifted my direction quite a lot, I started working with the local government as a web developer on a contract basis, I loved my web development but when the contract ended I started looking for other work. From here I started working in a support role at my local communications provider and after five great years moved on to a consultancy role where I am today.
My love of ConfigMgr started really with plain old software deployments, it was the tool of choice for where I worked. We then migrated to ConfigMgr 2007 where all the fun of software patching and operating system deployment came in. I am a specialist in enterprise desktop deployment and bring your own device so OSD fits in really well with that. Some of my projects have demanded 4,000 builds a week using ConfigMgr to build and deploy these machines to sometimes vanilla configurations and sometimes complex configurations.
Brian: What qualifications and or education have you had?
Martyn: Where to start! First of all I didn’t go to university (or college depending where in the world you are reading this). You hear this notion that you need to have some kind of degree to get anywhere in IT, it’s simply not true. Maybe I did it the hard way getting the experience and not the degree, I don’t really know but all I know is, I am very happy in my job and I haven’t come across the situation where I have needed a degree.
Qualification wise, I have a fair few MCPs such as both the ConfigMgr 2007 and ConfigMgr 2012 exams. I am a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist in ConfigMgr, Windows and Office deployment and client management. I am also a Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) for Windows 7 and a Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) for Private Cloud.
Brian: What do you like to do for fun? Any hobbies?
Martyn: Apart from getting to work with the latest technology, I love music. I have a wide taste in music, I also play the guitar where I am pretty proficient in playing anything Muse, the lead guitarist Matt Bellamy is a great role model for anyone wanting to play the guitar I think, he really makes the instrument sing.
Brian: What made you want to write on theitbros.com?
Martyn: Good question! I actually found you guys on Twitter and then looked at your website, it looked like a solid community which could only grow, I see this as a chance to share my depth knowledge in a wide range of enterprise technologies with readers which may not always represent that sector of this fabulous industry we work in.
Brian: What kind of posts do you have planned?
Martyn: That would be telling! Only joking, while I don’t want to give to many details away, I am planning some series of posts which will follow set themes, I am looking at a series dedicated to ConfigMgr and also a series dedicated to the Private Cloud, how to set one up and how to monitor, manage and operate one. Hopefully people will enjoy reading them as much as I will writing them.
We look forward to working with Martyn!
