How to Clear Browser History


As you’re probably aware, your entire itinerary as you surf the web is recorded, i.e. saved to the cache on your computer. There are, however, a number of reasons you might want to clear that cache periodically. For one thing, all that data is saved on your hard drive, so by deleting the history you’re actually creating more space disk space. You might also want to clear your history for privacy-related reasons. Whatever your motivation, here is a quick guide to clearing your internet browser history – just scroll down to see the information about the browser you are interested in.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

How to view History in Internet Explorer:

In Internet Explorer 6.x, click the Tools menu located in the toolbar at the top of the screen and in the dropdown menu select Internet Options. Now click the Settings button, followed by the View Files button.

In Internet Explorer 7 (and above), click the Tools button you will see in the upper-right corner, then select Internet Options from the dropdown menu. Next go to the General tab, in the Browsing history section, and click the Settings button. Finally, click the Views Files button on the Temporary Internet Files tab.

Note 1: In order to access the File Menu bar in Internet Explorer 7.0, you will have to first press the Alt key.

Note 2: Pressing Ctrl + H opens the History bar.

How to delete history in various versions of Internet Explorer:

If you’re using Internet Explorer 3.02 or lower, go to the View menu, click Options, then go to the Advanced tab, then to Settings, and finally click the Empty Folder button.

If you’re using Internet Explorer 4.x, go to History, then click Clear Internet History, and click OK.

In Internet Explorer 6 and above, find the Tools menu in the Toolbar at the top of the screen. Now select Internet Options and click the Clear Browser History button. Finally, click the Delete Files button and click OK.

In Internet Explorer 7 and above, click the Tools button you can see in the upper-right corner. Select Internet Options from the dropdown menu and find the Browsing history section in the General tab. There, click the Delete button, check the boxes corresponding to the data you would like removed, and click Delete again.

Mozilla Firefox

How to view History in Mozilla Firefox:

If you don’t have a homepage set (i.e., when you open the browser you just get the Mozilla logo, a search bar, and a series of icons below it), simply click the History button you can see at the bottom of the screen.

If you do have a homepage set, press either Ctrl + H to open the history bar on the left side of the screen, or Ctrl + Shift + H to open the History window.

Another way to do this is by clicking the Menu icon you can find near the top-right corner of the screen and select History from there.

How to delete History in Mozilla Firefox:

Firstly, hold down Ctrl + Shift + Del to open the Clear Recent History window. Next, select the time range you want to clear. Finally, click the arrow for Details and choose what data you want cleared and hit Clear Now to complete the process.

There’s also another way of doing this. Click the Menu button we’ve mentioned earlier, then click the History button, followed by Clear recent history. Once again, select the time range you wish to clear, choose the data you want removed from a list of options, and complete the process by clicking the Clear Now button.

Google Chrome

How to view History in Google Chrome:

To view your History in the Google Chrome browser, you can:

  • press Ctrl + H (which opens the History bar on the left side of the screen), or
  • click the Wrench or Menu icon you can find at the top-right of the browser window, and then click History.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Del, which opens the Clear Browsing Data Window. Once there, simply click the Clear browsing data button.

Another way to do this is by first clicking the Wrench or Menu icon at the top-right side of the browser window, then going to the More tools button and selecting Clear browsing data… Next, select how far back you want the browsing history deleted: past hour, past day, past week, last four weeks, or the beginning of time (which clears you entire browsing history). Also, select the data you want deleted by checking/unchecking the boxes on the list. Finally, click Clear browsing data to complete the process.

View and delete history in Chrome on Android device:

1. Open the Google Chrome browser.

2. Tap the Menu icon at the top-right corner of the screen, next to the address bar.

3. Next, tap History, followed by CLEAR BROWSING DATA…

4. Finally, select the appropriate boxes and tap the Clear button to complete the process.

Opera

How to view History in Opera:

Either hold down Ctrl + H, or click the Opera button in the upper-left part of the window and then select History.

How to delete History in Opera:

Click the Opera button in the upper-left part of the window, then select History. Now click Clear browsing data… You will see a window containing Obliterate the following items from – click the down arrow next to it and select “the beginning of time”. Finally, check the appropriate boxes and hit Clear browsing data.

Safari

How to view History in Safari:

Open the History menu found in the menu bar at the top of the browser window. There, you will see the last 10 pages you have visited. There should also be a menu option to view the last 6 or 7 days` worth of history, listing the pages visited in each of those days.

How to delete History in Safari:

There are two paths you could take to delete your browser History in Safari, depending on the version you are running. Simply choose the one which works for you.

Method #1: Open the Safari menu in the menu bar at the top of the browser window. Select the Clear History and Website Data, and then in the Clear dropdown list choose how far back you want to clear the history (the last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all history). Finally, hit the Clear History button to clear the browser history, in addition to cookies and other data.

Method #2: Click on the Gear icon located at the top-right of the browser window. Then hit the Reset Safari… A window will open – there, uncheck any boxes corresponding to data you do no wish to clear and then click the Reset button.

How to view and clear History on a Safari mobile device

Note: This guide only works for iPhones and iPads running iOS 5.0 or later.

Open the Safari browser and scroll up until you see the address bar at the top of the screen and a toolbar at the bottom. On that toolbar, look for an icon which resembles a book (it should be the fourth icon from the left) and click on it. Finally, click History and then Clear.

Netscape

How to view and delete History in Netscape:

To view your browser History in Netscape, go to the toolbar, and then to Edit -> Preferences -> History. Find the folder in which Netscape stores your files and double-click it.

To delete your browser History, once again go to the toolbar, and then to Edit -> Preferences -> History. Once there, simply click the Clear History button.

Other Tips

  • If you find that you’re clearing your browser history on a regular basis, it would probably be a good idea to start browsing in incognito mode.
  • If you don’t see the File, Edit, and View menus in Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, press the Alt key to reveal them.
